Fyodor Urnov

Gene editing pioneer at UC Berkeley & the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), advancing CRISPR technologies for therapeutic applications.

Fyodor D. Urnov, PhD, is a leading genome editing scientist and translational researcher known for his work advancing CRISPR-based therapies from concept to clinic. He is a Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and serves as Director of Technology & Translation at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), where he focuses on bridging fundamental genome engineering technologies with real-world therapeutic applications.

Dr. Urnov’s research centers on the development and deployment of precise genome editing tools, with a strong emphasis on enabling treatments for genetic diseases. He has played a key role in pioneering early genome editing approaches, including zinc finger nucleases, and later contributed to the advancement of CRISPR-based editing strategies. His work has been instrumental in translating genome editing into clinical contexts, including efforts toward curative therapies for conditions such as sickle cell disease.

He earned his PhD in Molecular Biology and has held leadership roles in both academia and industry, including at Sangamo Therapeutics, where he helped drive early clinical applications of genome editing technologies. In addition to his research, Dr. Urnov is a prominent advocate for responsible innovation, regulatory clarity, and equitable access in the field of genome editing.

Widely recognized for his scientific contributions and thought leadership, Dr. Urnov continues to shape the future of genome engineering through a combination of rigorous research, translational strategy, and public engagement.
